Musician Sandeep Chowta has a lot to talk about these days. The maverick has written for the Grammy-nominated American jazz fusion band from NewYork — Spyro Gyra – for their latest record. Not just this, Sandeep will also be performing with the extraordinary fusion and blues guitarist Scott Henderson, on May 16, in Mumbai.
“Scott was on an Asia tour in March and he called me to say that he wanted to perform in India but since I happened to be in Toronto, it did not work out,” says Sandeep. “But now that I am back to Mumbai, he’s keen to fly down.”
However, it is not just the gig that’s keeping him busy. The duo is also planning to record a studio album this time. “We both had been waiting to do an album together since his visit to India last year, but couldn’t because he was busy working on his band Trival Tech. So, we are pretty sure of doing it this time.”
The artistes have already started preparing for the performance individually. “I have started writing some bits and even he has somethings in mind. In fact, he says, ‘I don’t want to come back if I don’t have new songs’.” The album, promises Sandeep, will be an eclectic mix of all new compositions.
Scott, who is very fond of Indian percussion instruments, wants to have a heavy Indian influence on the music album. “He’ll bring on the table what he will. And it’s going to be born in the next couple of months.”
Sandeep, who had been missing from the limelight for quite a while now, was apparently busy working on a Hollywood film. While he refuses to talk about it at the moment, he admits that “the nitty gritties will be known in a few weeks’ time”.
