Star crusaders: Priyanka Chopra with Ranbir Kapoor
|
Amidst reports of rampant piracy and video recordings from inside movie theatres being leaked on the internet and on cheap DVDs, actors Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, filmmakers Sajid Nadiadwala and Ram Mirchandani have sought the help of Mumbai police to intensify action against movie pirates.
They have dashed off a series of letters to the police top brass seeking their help to contain the piracy of their latest film. The letters (copies of which are with DNA) have been individually addressed to the Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Dayal, Joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy and joint commissioner of police (law and order) Rajnish Seth.
Acting on the complaints, the police along with the organisation Alliance Against Copyright Theft (AACT) have seized 1,028 pirated DVDs out of which 321 were ofthe latest Ranbir-Priyanka starrer. The confiscated copies also include a few hundred copies of the latest Rajinikanth starrer.
“One person has been arrested in connection with the crime from a hideout at Andheri East,” says Mayank Sen of AACT.
According to sources, the producers fear that the movie has been leaked on a larger scale.‘We expect that there will be rampant and active piracy of the film… (by physical means through DVDs and through cable piracy) on its release and we have geared ourselves to curb the same in whatever manner possible,’ reads the joint petition that was sent on Friday last week. In the letter, the producers have mentioned that they have tied up with AACT an organisation that tracks such leaks. Ranbir and Priyanka have already launched a helpline for citizens to track such leaks.
“The relevant department (of Mumbai police) are tracking the sale of the DVD in the open market. We are also alert at the possibility of it being sold through a private network,” informs a police officer. Sources state that the film has made its way to the black market, but is not being sold in open markets.
