Russell Brand deported from Japan, says wife Katy Perry

British comedian Russell Brand was deported from Japan at the weekend because of his previous criminal history, his pop star wife Katy Perry said in a message on Twitter.

Perry, on a concert tour of Japan, said the star of the movie Arthur had been denied entry.

"So ... my husband just got deported from Japan," Perry wrote in a Twitter message on Saturday. "I am so. sad. I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place."

A spokesperson for Brand could not be reached for comment.

Brand, who married 'California Gurls' singer Perry last year, has battled drug and alcohol addiction and has been arrested multiple times, most recently for an alleged attack on the paparazzi at a Los Angeles airport in 2010.

Perry said in another Twitter message that Brand was deported from Japan for prior criminal cases from over 10 years before.

On Sunday, Brand took a more ironic view of his troubles in Japan.

"Planning escape from Japanese custody. It''s bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick," Brand wrote on his Twitter page, which was accompanied by a photo he appeared to have taken of himself in a drab room with a clock on the wall.

That was followed by the Twitter message, "Stockholm syndrome kicking in. Just asked my guard out for (vegetarian) sushi. He giggled."

Perry continued her tour in Japan as planned.

Brand and Perry were married last year and have quickly become one of Hollywood's most high profile couples.

Brand parlayed his fame in his native Britain into starring roles in the comedies Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) and Get Him to the Greek (2010) from producer Judd Apatow.
