Mumbai: He recently won music website Indaba's John Legend remix contest named after the soul singer's big hit If You're Out There, and has been all over the press since then. It takes him to the rare category of an Indian-American producing music in the West. Shuffling between New York and Mumbai, hip hop and R&B producer/composer Raj Makhija has been in the city for the past six months working on some Bollywood projects.
And he's getting great reactions for his latest offering-- yet another addition to the various versions of AR Rahman's Jai Ho. An admirer of Jay-Z, Makhija (also known as RajStar) has paid a tribute to the rap star by remaking Rahman's claim to global fame Jai Ho and calling it Jay Hov -- an alternate name for Jay-Z. "It's a mash-up of Jay-Z (also known as Jay Hov) and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire and I have got phenomenal feedback for it," says Makhija, explaining that it's just for clubs and doesn't need any copyright from the original artist.
And yes, the song's been spreading pretty fast, especially in clubs over here.
Did you know?
Rap artist Jay-Z is alternatively referred to as Jay Hov similar to the Hebrew word 'Jehova' which means 'messiah' as Jay-Z considers himself the messiah or God of the rap world.
