He’s often called Bangalore’s first poster boy and for good reason too — a soaring career in modelling that led to a film career in three languages, a national award winning film and a series of hits in Kollywood and Tollywood — Shaam’s seen it all and is still very much around.
“People keep asking me where I’ve been, and all I can say is that the project I have been working on has been extremely demanding,” says Shaam.
Shaam was last seen in the Telugu film Kshetram, where he starred opposite Priyamani. The film did not bomb at the box-office, but didn’t do very well either; the actor marks his return to Kollywood after a two year hiatus, with this new project that might hit screens in May.
“The film is called 6 and follows a special tale in four parts that is woven around the number six. The tale is shot in six cities, follows the lives of the cast in six months, spans six years and accounts for six birthdays — making it quite an interesting project to work with,” Shaam enthuses.
One of the looks for the film that the producers want to keep hidden is that of Shaam sporting long hair and a beard. “People don’t recognise me anymore, thanks to the hair and beard; I was asked to lose almost 10kg for the film, which I did and I still don’t look thin enough. So, I’ve shifted to an even more gruelling diet which leaves me feeling really weak most of the time,” Shaam tells us.
The actor has been quite popular among his fans, especially at the CCL tournaments and was quite upset about not being able to participate in all the matches this year. “I was present for the Dubai and Hyderabad match, but couldn’t play any of the other matches. I have however continued supporting the fraternity by accompanying them whenever I can,” he adds.
6 will see the return of Thotti Jaya’s director VZ Durai after Nepali in 2008. The film will feature music by Shrikant Deva and will also see Poonam Kaur and a new female lead opposite Shaam.
“I am really excited about my return to Kollywood, but I haven’t bid farewell to Tollywood; so much so, I start shooting for a new film there in March. The film will star Allari Naresh along with me and will be directed by Anil C. The team hasn’t decided on a name as yet, but the name will be announced shortly. I am also looking forward to a project in Tamil soon, but more details on that later,” Shaam reveals.
We finally ask Shaam about the rumours on a Bollywood move and he reveals, “I have been in talks with Sajid Nadiadwala and Salman Khan about the Hindi remake of Kick, that has been delayed for a bit. I hope to reprise the role of the cop that I played in the original — I am also most likely to replay the same role in the Kannada remake, starring Sudeep.”
With his hands full, and some meaty roles to look forward to, Shaam is definitely making a comeback like never before. All we can hope is that the extremely handsome actor clicks this time around and returns to ruling the hearts of the masses, like he once so charmingly did.
