What happens when hardcore drummer Sidd Coutto, Hindi vocalist Arijit Datta, blues and funk influenced lead guitarist Vinay Lobo and rock bass guitarist Amit Ahuja come together to form a band? You get Airport — a unique Hindi jazz band.

Sidd, who has been a drummer with Zero for many years, will now be a part of this Hindi band for the first time and he trusts in the kind of sound they have come up with. “We didn’t force it. I am doing what I usually do.

Arijit has been writing in Hindi and Vinay and Amit are also doing what they have always been doing, so our sound is natural,” he says.Airport, which has aninnovative jazz-pop-rock feel, gave its first performance at Il Terrazzo’s Daddy’s Windsong Wednesdays and one could identify the intensity in their songs like Yahaan, Malaal, Seher and Jane bhi Do.

“I don’t know if I can slot the music yet,” says Sidd. He will also do a Bob Marley tribute tonight at Blue Frog with his band member Vinay Lobo and Puff On Tobacco. “It’s a Bob Marley tribute so obviously we could perform with Tough On Tobacco. It had to be Puff On Tobacco!”

But why is he doing a Bob Marley tribute? “I think Blue Frog thought I was the most
‘reggae’ person to do it!” he says. So, is he influenced by Marley? “I am more influenced by Police, but I have listened to Marley all my life and I know there is some
influence somewhere... though not very obvious. My uncle used to listen to Marley all day and songs like Buffalo Soldiers and Redemption Song are etched in my memory.”
