Rahul Bose's forthcoming project Fired, a horror film with lot of blood and gore -- and also full frontal nudity in a sex scene between Rahul and British model Militza Radmilovic -- has run into trouble with the Censor Board.
When the makers sought the advice of Vinayak Azad of the Censor Board, about their TV promo, he told them it would get an 'A' certificate.
According to the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act, TV promos with 'A' certificate cannot be aired on any Indian channel. The producers were advised to remove the nudity and tone down the violent scenes. Even after that, Vinayak thought the promo still deserved 'A'! This has now upset the film-makers.
"We don't know how we can put the message across to the audience that ours is a horror film if we are not allowed to show blood and gore in the promos. We agree the nudity scene might be pushing it a little too far, but a horror film has to have element of horror. It's only logical," says Ashish Bhatnagar, CEO, I Dream Production.
Adds Rahul Bose: "I feel we have a misplaced sense of censorship. What I feel is gory or vulgar, somebody else might not. Even for the sex scene, I feel people are more mature now and so self-censorship should be the key."
But Vinayak Azad clarified his stand on the matter: "They had not applied for a certificate but had approached me to advise them about the promo. So I told they can't get a 'U/A' if they have nudity and so much blood and gore. Like it or not, we live in a sensitive society and we feel a film is better off not showing sex and nudity if it is not really not required."
