Films on guy bonding in Bollywood have traditionally been safe box office bets. From the iconic Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra playing best friends in Sholay to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Karan Arjun to the more recent Golmaal and Munnabhai series, time and again this genre has proved that it can deliver a blockbuster.

So it doesn’t come as any surprise that Rajkumar Hirani’s forthcoming movie starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, Priyadarshan’s Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal starrer and Zoya Akhtar’s directorial venture that stars Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol are all dabbling with this theme.

Explains trade analyst Taran Adarsh, “Films on guys have been very lucky at the box office for sure! It is definitely one of the safer bets as far as the industry is concerned as it is a male-dominated industry and people love to see their heroes more than heroines. That is the harsh truth.”

Zoya Akhtar says, “Films on guys have a quirk and they are a lot of fun. Dil Chahta Hai was a movie people can see on and on because it had everything in it — emotion, action, fun.”

Sajid Khan, who made the guy bonding hit Heyy Babyy, adds in, “Cinema across the globe makes movies on guy bonding (see box) because universally the movie industry is a male-dominated industry. I’m sure films on girl bonding can also be made, but unfortunately heroes are a more powerful lot.”
