'Mary Poppins' named UK’s favourite festive film

Mary Poppins is the UK’s favourite festive film - with the average Briton having seen it more than eight times over past Christmases, a poll has revealed.

The 1964 musical film starring Julie Andrews as the nanny who is “practically perfect in every way”, defeated the next Christmas blockbutser, Home Alone, which on average has been watched just over seven times, the Sun reported.

In a poll of 2,000 people, conducted by TV company Freeview, The Wizard Of Oz came third, followed by another Julie Andrews classic, The Sound Of Music, in fourth position.

Strictly Come Dancing star Denise Van Outen is fronting Freeview+ Christmas campaign.

“It’s no surprise to hear that we’ll be tuning in to our family favourites once again. For me Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without Mary Poppins,” she said.

“Having missed so much TV recently with rehearsals, I’ll definitely be taking charge of the remote control this Christmas,” she added.
