After receiving awards and accolades for his gay film 'Brokeback Mountain', Ang Lee is now making a film on lesbianism. Two of the hottest Hollywood stars, Kate Moss and Charlize Theron will be playing lovers in the film. After Hours was surprised to find that each of the female actors we spoke to had reservations to play a lesbian character.
Do you think a lesbian film will work in India?
Urmila Matondkar: I don't know. Maybe it will be accepted, maybe it won't. If it is done in a sensitive manner, it shouldn't be a problem. People are becoming more open to such issues.
Shilpa Shetty: I don't think a film made on a lesbian couple would work in India. I mean, look at 'Girlfriend'.
Vidya Balan: People are becoming more and more open to good films. So if it is well made, why not?
Would you take up such a role?
Urmila: I don't think so simply because I would not be comfortable doing something like this. I have nothing against watching such a film, but personally I cannot identify with such a character.
Shilpa: Even if a serious director made such a film in India, I don't think I would work in it. It's a concept that goes contrary to our culture. Actors are people that the masses look up to and I don't think I want to be portrayed as 'someone like that'.
Vidya: I'm at such a nascent stage in my career, that I haven't really thought about it.
