On her 30th birthday, Konkona Sen Sharma said that though she has won awards, garnered recognition and has even tasted box office success, she would love to use a time machine to teleport her back to the Bollywood of 1970s.
“I can identify with the films that were made in the 1970s when the new wave of parallel cinema was sweeping across the industry. Personally, if I had a chance to turn back time, I would love to be born and work at that time and interact and see the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Om Puri, Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani’s work. These people made the bold decision of starting something unconventional in the industry,” Konkona tells After Hrs.
She adds: “I have actually fantasised about myself working in that era which made movies that saw heroines wear chiffons and look gorgeous like in Silsila and even made films which were serious giving women the scope to show off their acting talents. There was a marked distinction between the commercial and art house movies. Today, all that is a little blurred. It’s not that I’m complaining because I also love the kind of movies that I’m doing and are being made in Bollywood today.”
Ask her what she has in store for her birthday, and Konkona says: “I’m a private person; there will be no show shaa at all. I feel like a kid every year on my birthday. I’m excited about gifts and having close people around. I generally take chutti on my birthday but this year I’m taking chutti on the weekend after my birthday. However, I’m not going to reveal what I’m going to do,” she says.
Konkona also reveals that with the passage of every birthday, her desire to become a film-maker is growing stronger. “I admire many film-makers like Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal, Imtiaz Ali, Rajkumar Hirani, Dibakar Banerjee, Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Basu and many others. I simply love my mother’s (Aparna Sen) work too and she inspires me to become a film-maker,” she says.
Koko ends, “I would love to direct my own movie but I don’t know when that would happen. I will write a script for sure but I’m a little lazy too. However, if I make a movie or write something, I will try to make it the best as you do know I like to keep high standards.”
