Barbara Mori and Hrithik Roshan in Kites

Dubbed as ‘deliriously entertaining’ by international trade magazine Variety, actor Hrithik Roshan and newcomer Barbara Mori’s tale of unrequited love in Kites has certainly touched the hearts of audiences globally. Though reports speak of a subdued opening in India, the figures for the opening weekend tell a different tale. One of the most awaited movies of 2010, this Anurag Basu-directed film has received amammoth opening in its first
weekend.

While the movie grossed over Rs21 crore on the opening day in the country — the second highest ever, its opening is set to create a record of sorts internationally. Analysts say the first day’s collections point to an all-time high for first weekend box office collections worldwide. Hrithik’s film also marks the widest ever release for any movie. The film released simultaneously in 2,000 screens across India through 10,000 shows daily and across 500 screens overseas. Kites ran to full houses in 30 countries — an unprecedented achievement.

Sanjeev Lamba, CEO, Reliance BIG Pictures, says, “We are extremely delighted with the film’s initial response at the box office and expect it to set new benchmark for the Indian film business.” Producer Rakesh Roshan adds, “I am overwhelmed by the responseinIndia and abroad.”

Kites has also been earning great critical acclaim in the West. A New York Times report reads: “Mr. Hrithik Roshan requires viewing uncut: writhing on the dance floor or just gazing into space, the man was made to drive women crazy, one movie at a time.” While the San Francisco Chronicle called the movie a beautiful opera, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Hrithik Roshan anchors the film with a solid, believableperformance and a palpable chemistry with his co-star that will remind audiences just how hot a good Bollywood romance can be.”

Kites will also see an international version titled Kites Remix that opens worldwide this Friday. This movie is being presented by Hollywood’s top director Brett Ratner of X-Men and Rush Hour 3 fame.
