According to Muchhad, “The most important thing in making a paan is the way it’s prepared. If the chuna and kathha is not in the right proportion it can be harmful,” he says adding, “Extra chuna can cut the tongue.”

Muchhad is actually Jaishankar Tiwari of Allahabad, who has been running the shop since 1977. When asked for his special recommendations, he quips “We have a Muchhad’s Special 600 Kimam, Navratan Kimam, and Meetha Mava.” Spend up to Rs. 50 and more for your paan here.

Volga Paan House: Located at Fort is synonymous with paan in Mumbai. The paan specialist here says, “There is something intensely satisfying about chewing the betel leaf, nuts and misri, while savouring the slightly sour taste too. Our specialities are the Kimam and the Meetha, both at Rs. 7. The Meetha paan is a mix of cardamom, clove and a paste of rose petals.

Another place to pop a paan is famously known as Hit Pandit’s paan shop opposite Taj President in Cuffe Parade. “The Kolkata Magai as well as Benarsi Betel is popular,” one is told. It is open till 1.00 am. Here you’ll get a special supari that makes your saada paan memorable.

Adjoining Signature restaurant at Seven Bungalows, Andheri is this unnamed paan stall that started in 1987. It belongs to T R Swami from Karnataka.  He says, “We get our betel leaves from Kolkata. The Magai, Saada, Benarasi and Allahbadi paans are special. He has filmstars like Sunil Shetty and Sanjay Dutt as clientele.

Mishra Paan Bhandar, Juhu Beach: This is a very well-known place that paan lovers visit since the time the grand old Mishraji was alive. His kin continue the tradition even today. The Maghai Joda paan is a must-have here. “You can also try the Kolkata Meetha and the Malai Meetha for Rs.20; its delicious,” states Mishraji.
