‘Katy Perry wanted it outrageous & fun’

Designers Falguni and Shane Peacock, whose outfit singer Katy Perry wore at a music event — her first big appearance after her recent marriage, said so.

‘Katy Perry wanted it outrageous & fun’

Singer Katy Perry’s got an Indian closet craving again! First, it was her much hyped Indian wedding close to a jungle resort and now she’s worn Indian designer Falguni and Shane Peacock’s creation to one of the biggest music award functions — the Europe Music Awards (EMA) — in Madrid last Sunday.

“It’s true and we had fun designing the outfit,” says Falguni. “Katy wanted it to be something outrageous and fun. She loved the dress, a green feathered outfit.”

That winning feeling…
The singer’s stylist had sent an email to the Peacocks about a month ago with the brief. “Katy liked the outfit that we did for her for the X Factor. At the time, her stylist was also sourcing outfits for the upcoming EMAs and Katy was keen to view our designs. She was nominated for Best Music Award for her video — California Gurls —and there was talk that she had a great chance of winning it.”

The Peacocks sent across two outfits — a cat-suit and a dress. Katy chose the latter. “It was an amazing feeling as not only did she look fabulous on stage in the outfit but also won,” enthuses Falguni.

Kylie Minogue and Madonna too
The duo are not new on the international map, having designed for singer Fergie, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, Madonna, Kylie Minouge, Ozzy Osbourne’s video Let Me Hear You Scream and TV presenter Hofit Golan.

So what’s the secret to designing for stars? “I guess the key is to customise it the way they want it to be,” she says.
And what do these celebs look for? “Well, they don’t want an Indian touch but things like feathers and sequins, which are very Western. Hollywood’s looking at India not just as an Indian market but one that’s on par with the West, which is great,” she smiles.
