Actress Kareena Kapoor has agreed to spearhead an awareness campaign advocating the safety of women. She will also be one of the first to sign a petition that will presented to the President of the country, Pratibha Patil.

According to sources, Kapoor feels strongly about the issue and was waiting for the right opportunity to channel her feelings and spread awareness for the safety of women, especially in cities like Delhi and Noida.

“Kareena hopes that the issues concerning safety for women will be taken more seriously,” says her spokesperson.

According to sources, the recent spate of violence on women has shaken the actress. “Why is it that in our country a woman, irrespective of her socio-economic status, is so vulnerable? Is it too much to ask for women to be able to walk the streets freely without the fear of being assaulted or attacked?” says a source echoing the sentiments of the actor.

The actress, it is learnt, was deeply affected by the incident of the assault on Bengaluru BPO workers and the case of a woman being burnt on suspicion of having an affair in Bundelkhand. Besides, women being killed for same caste marriages in Haryana and Rajasthan have reportedly brought tears to her eyes.

“In our culture, a woman is worshipped in the form of Durga and Saraswati and at the same time she is eve-teased and made a victim of ill-treatment. How ironic is that? These are some of the issues that Kareena feels very strongly about,” says the source who is very close to the actress.

The most important aspect of the campaign is the petition that is touted to reach the president soon. “The Bollywood actor wants the cold facts to be highlighted and is urging citizens to sign the petition to be presented before the President, one of the most positions in the country, and held by a woman!” adds the source.
