October 5, 2006, is the day her life changed forever. Or else Bollywood might have got another heroine in Kangana Ranaut’s sister. Instead Rangoli Ranaut was piecing her life together after her face was disfigured by an acid splash from a perverted youth.

Cut to this Monday, where Rangoli made a public appearance to attend actor Sanjay and wife Manyata Dutt’s iftaar party. Though she held Kangana’s hands for strength, she faced the world with a face completely uncovered. A bold step indeed!

“The doctors have been able to restore her face completely after a series of surgeries. Earlier, she used to never step out in public without covering her face with a veil. But till yesterday, it was a different story. Knowing Kangana, it must have inspired her sister to step out without the veil,” says a source.

Rangoli was 24 at the time of the attack. She was pursuing her MSc degree (in Microbiology) at Uttaranchal College of Science and Technology.She and her friend, Vijaya, who also faced the acid attack,was staying at an apartment at Karanpur in Dehradun. According to HimachalPradesh police records, Rangoli received a call claiming that a youth (her attacker) had a bank draft meant for Kangana. When Vijaya called Rangoli outside to take the draft, the youth, who was carrying the acid in a plastic mug, threw it on Rangoli’s face. Vijaya also received burn injuries, and the two were rushed to hospital. Two men were later arrested in connection with the attack.

“Rangoli is a lot more confident these days. She plans to get out in public more often with Kangana. She’s not willing to talk right now. She looks as beautiful as ever,” adds the source, who was also present at the iftaar party.
