Kalki gets theatrical!

First Shanghai, then Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and now Ek Thi Daayan, —  actress Kalki Koechlin’s been shooting non-stop for one film after another. But the actress reveals that she is now planning to take some time off for theatre after wrapping up the Vishal Bhardwaj film with Emraan Hashmi and Konkona Sen Sharma.

“I find theatre creatively more satisfying than films. Theatre is more raw, it still makes me nervous,” says Kalki. Since she was busy with films, theatre had taken a backseat, admits the actress.

“But I will soon be taking a break to work on my new play. At least I plan to. I have been making such plans for God knows how long, but I really will try harder now,” she smiles.

Talking about the two, Kalki says that both theatre and films have their own charm and she is glad to be a part of both the industries. “In theatre, there are only good actors, no stars. To become a star, you have to take the Bollywood route.”

However, she is quick to add that this was not what drew her to the big screen. “It’s great to feel like a movie star, but that was an added bonus. The main attraction in exploring the big screen was to give life to your stories. Besides, the reach of films is hard to match,” adds Kalki

As for her coming back to theatre, Kalki says that she wouldn’t call it returning. “I had never gone away in the first place to now want to return. Theatre has always been an integral part for me. It is my first love,” she says. The actor will be working on her play Hamlet and Prince next.

“Theatre needs undivided concentration and attention, so I don’t want to rush it up,” adds Kalki.

“In films you have multiple takes, but here it’s all a one-shot thing to establish that connect with audience. The acceptance or rejection is instant in theatre,” explains Kalki. And while she says that hubby, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is her stronger connect to films, when it comes to theatre, it is Kalki who is the main connect for Anurag.
