They don’t call him the YouTube darling for nothing, hardly 72 hours after his second ‘viral’ video surfaced on the video-streaming site; ‘Kolaveri’ Dhanush seems to be sitting on the next potential ‘biggest’ thing on cyberspace.
He was approached by health-drink Boost for a video on Sachin Tendulkar and being a huge fan himself, he roped in his trusted aide Anirudh Ravichander for the music and also brought in Anushka Shetty— the prettiest thing in Kollywood right now — for the glamour and fun quotient.
We caught up with the young superstar while he was in Tirupati, and his now famous brand of humility, much inspired by his infamous father-in-law, had us chatting non-stop about everything under the sun.
“I am thankful for the kind of popularity I have been getting across the country and I must say, that when I do stop to breathe and let it all sink it, it’s far too overwhelming to truly and completely comprehend. It’s just been magic, these last few months,” Dhanush says.
Rumours were running wild a few days ago about a possible visit to Bangalore and so we enquire. “I am coming to Bangalore this Sunday and will perform Kolaveri Di for the first time in the city… but the concert is not about me, I am just accompanying Anirudh. Also, I really want to warn my fans, that I do not sound half as good in real, so don’t be too hard on me,” he says.
This will be the first time Bangalore will witness the actor live in performance and the fan clubs in the city are promising full attendance. We move on however, quickly throwing numbers at him, talking about how immensely popular his videos are on YouTube. “The videos for Three are trending and how! I think the last time I checked, a video, which is just the audio and a few stills from the film, for the song Po Nee Po, had close to 5,00,000 clicks and that’s a lot for just an audio track,” adds Dhanush.
His latest Anthem for Sachin is no less, the last we checked the video has been watched more than 4, 96, 000 times, just 24 hours after it was first uploaded. Now, that’s viral!
Dhanush does not shy away from thanking his wife for all this popularity. He readily says, “She’s as supportive as a wife and a friend can be, and I am really sad that I won’t get to spend Valentine’s Day with her this year. It’s been eight years since we were married and I am still in awe of how much energy she has. But I guess she understands that now, more than ever, its work over anything else,” enthuses Dhanush.
Aishwarya, as pretty as she is, has always preferred to stay behind the camera and Dhanush says, “I respect her decision and I hope to see her as a huge director some day. I don’t think she has ever wanted to act, and then again, maybe she shouldn’t either, unless she really wants to. It shouldn’t be just because other people think she should.”
Satisfied with how the conversation has proceeded, we conclude asking him about his projects that might unfurl soon and he almost immediately replies, “You must have heard about Raanjhnaa, my Hindi project with director Aanand L Rai, so that’s the most exciting project for now — but before that, I plan to shoot another Tamil film and the details about that, should be out in a few days.”
Dhanush might have been a superstar only in Tamilnadu for the last few years, but with each passing day of this year, the actor only seems to be becoming more popular. We hope to see the national award winning actor in more projects and wish him all the best for his Bollywood debut.
Watch him live at Tripura Vasini, Palace Ground, on February 12, 7pm onwards.
