I’m growing: Karan Johar

Karan Johar’s Kurbaan released yesterday. A gritty film, it’s one more step away from the mushy films Johar is known for. “I feel that I have evolved, but I was judged too soon as this bubblegum filmmaker,” says Karan.

He admits that it was this anger which made him make a movie like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. “I was angry at the backlash I got about being just able to make these grandeur-filled films. But now when I look back, I feel that it was a mistake that even with KANK, I didn’t  do what I should have. The subject didn’t require the opulence and canvas I gave it. I played safe in a way, but it worked,” he says.

Right now, he is going through a wide variety of cinematic experiences, Kurbaan being the latest. “It is totally Rensil’s (the director) baby. I went with it,” he says.

Recently Karan tweeted (he’s active on Twitter) about deciding to stop hating certain people. “I’m growing. I don’t hate people but I used to find certain people very annoying. But now I’m making an attempt to let go of it…it's not worth worrying, or being confused by any form of negativity. I want to reach creative nirvana. If they wish bad for me, it’s their problem. Why hate them, when I can laugh at them?” he says.

The man, who perhaps has the most friends in the industry, says, “I do feel lonely, but then I think every creative individual is lonely. I have stopped chasing happiness, because I have come to realise one truth — no matter how happy you are, it is temporary and sadness is the only constant. Do you remember that song, ‘Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta kyun satati hai, dukh to apna saathi hai?’ I totally relate to that song!”
