I don’t want to perform at Taj Mahal: AR Rahman

Music maestro, AR Rahman found himself in the eye of storm upon his return from Los Angeles for the music launch of his film Ek Tha Deewana at Agra. Dismissing the buzz of him performing at the heritage site of Taj Mahal, he said, “I was never suppose to perform at the Taj. It was a music launch event and I was to sing couple of songs, which I did in front of a crowd of 150. That can’t be called a performance.”

He later adds, “Frankly I do not want to perform at Taj Mahal! It’s an epitome of beauty,  love and serenity, and I don’t want to harm or disturb that by a music performance in front of 5,000 people here. I just love to enjoy the beauty of Taj Mahal and feel its positive vibes.”

Rahman is actively making music for both Bollywood and Hollywood films, and is quite enjoying the beauty of each genre.  “I love the kind of soulful music that I made for Ek tha Deewana, where I have sung a duet  Sharminda Hoon and also Hosanna, which is lovely and slightly altered to suit Hindi film sensibilities. I just finished doing music for We Love People by Alex Kurtzman, my first work with Dreamworks. It’s been a memorable experience and inspiring too,” he shares.

Ask the Oscar-winning maestro if he’s expecting the Bharat Ratna award that his fans are clamouring for, and he’s quick to reply, “No! Its too early for me to get a Bharat Ratna. I’m very happy with my Padmabhusan award. But if there’s anyone who deserves the Bharat Ratna, it is Sachin (Tendulkar).”

And what are his plans for the festive season? “Spending time with my family and friends as I’ve been travelling all the time recently,” says Rahman.
