I don’t believe in playing it safe: John Abraham

To do or not to do, seems to be actor John Abraham’s biggest dilemma as an actor these days when faced with scripts that are zara hatke by the mainstream commercial standards. Hardly surprising, considering the fact that though the actor’s performance in his recent films — Aashayein and even Jhootha Hi Sahi — won him accolades, the films’ response at the BO was not as encouraging.

And even though the Bollywood hunk asserts that he’s not afraid to take risks when it comes to experimenting on screen, his choice of films in hand tell another story. Almost all films in hand — Dostana 2, Race 2, Kha Kha Kha and even the stuck-in-the-cans Hook Ya Crook are as mainstream as they come. “It’s just coincidence. I would have done these films irrespective of the fate of my recent ‘experiments’ at the BO,” John is quick to explain.

Revealing that he finds it tough to turn away roles that are challenging, he adds, “I always go by scripts, not by genres or their commercial viability. I don’t believe in playing it safe there and am game for more experiments. I just believe in giving them all my best shot.”

What the actor’s giving his best to at present though is working on his hot bod! “Yes, I’m working towards getting back my old cuts and adding a few more to it. Getting them back was harder than I’d thought,” admits the actor, who’s back to sporting his six-pack abs after having sacrificed his toned look for his recent films. But now that John’s returning to the action genre, he’s leaving no machine in the gym untouched.

“I didn’t realise how much I missed doing some hardcore action until now. It’s addictive,” adds John. Did he also miss all the female attention that he draws every time he sports that toned look on screen? “Definitely. It’s good to have the flow of compliments back for that one too,” he laughs.
