I’d like to do a Bollywood film: Rahul Sharma

His name has now become synonymous with the santoor tunes he plays, which he ensures reach out to all the music aficionados and Rahul Sharma is also the only Indian musician who has been invited to perform at the prestigious Theatre de La Ville in Paris on November 21.

“I had performed there before as well. It’s a great feeling to perform live to a 1000 people and know that the French have so much appreciation for music,” says Rahul. His performance will be a classical treat. “It will be a two hour-long show with santoor and tabla,” he adds.

Rahul tags himself as a travelling musician.

“There’s so much of thrill involved in a live performance,” he adds. When asked if he would be drifting towards Bollywood anytime soon, he says, “I’d like to do a Bollywood film. But it would require me to be stationed in Mumbai with too much of studio rehearsals involved. And in that case I won’t be able to do justice to santoor and to my dad’s training.” His only Bollywood venture was Mujhse Dosti Karoge, post which he was offered Hum Tum as well. “But I was afraid I might get sucked into Bollywood,” he admits.

Apart from that his album In the footsteps of Babbar was released last month by the old American label Smithsonian Folkways. The album is a collaboration between him and an Afghani rabaab player, Humayun Sakhi. The compositions are by Rahul.

“Both santoor and rabaab come from the troubled regions of Kashmir and Afghanistan respectively,” says Rahul. The album, which is yet to release in India, required a “lot of researching”.

Meanwhile he has finished working on his
album with American jazz singer Kenny G, which will hit the market next month.
