There are times when you have a script that’s so convincing that you can never say no. This was the case for Pooja Gandhi too, who couldn’t say no to Aptha, a film on student life and realities that releases this week.
“When my director approached me with this subject saying there are four more girls, I almost said no without listening to the script. But, he insisted I hear him out. I’m glad I did, the story is wonderful and I couldn’t say no,” says Gandhi.
“Although there are four other girls in the film, all of them have negative shades to their character. I play the victim to all that these girls do. It was something that really appealed to my heart, since it reflects a lot of the realities we see around us. I played a student last in Taj Mahal which released over three years ago,” says Gandhi .
The film, which deals with a small town girl coming to study in a city college, deals with the idea of ragging in medical colleges.
“There are some students who come to big cities with ambitious dreams. While some girls can easily adapt to the lifestyle and change with it too, there are others who have problems and are ridiculed. I play one such girl in Aptha, whose ambition is to become a doctor,” says Gandhi.
Sanjeev Kumar debuts as a director in this film. “Sanjeev is a good friend of mine and he was the co-director for my previous film, Anu. He’d asked me then if I’d act in his directorial debut. I had said I would definitely do it. A year after Anu’s release, he approached me with this film,” says Gandhi.
She is paired opposite newcomer Neeraj Shah, who has already acted in two Telugu films.
“This is one of those films I did for creative satisfaction. I am really hoping that the film will do well, because a lot of hard work and passion has gone into it,” says Pooja, who hasn’t had a really good run at the box office recently, with her last few releases failing to attract audiences.
