As the frontrunner to the Oscars, the Golden Globe Awards promise both nail-biting thrilling moments and a high dose of glamour on the red carpet.

With the curiosity-o-meter ranging at an all time high, what with the interesting line-up in the race to the big win, DNA checks out some of the top contenders to watch out for at the event today (our time).   

Right ahead in the running for some of the top honours and the best bet to sweep the awards in more than one categories is The Descendants. Directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney, the film has been nominated in several categories including the Best Film (Drama), Best Direction, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress (Shailene Woodley), and the Best Screenplay (Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne, Jim Rash). Clooney winning the Best Actor award at the recently held Critic’s Choice award too have made him a better bet this year at the Globes.

Interestingly, giving tough competition to his own film is Clooney, who has been nominated for the Best Director for his film, The Ides Of March. The film has also been nominated for the Best Film (Drama), Best Screenplay (Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon) apart from Best Actor (Ryan Gosling) category.

Giving the film competition is the Brad Pitt-starrer Moneyball. The film has been nominated for the Best Film (Drama), Best Actor (Pitt) and Best Screenplay (Stan Chervin, Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian). Martin Scorsese has been nominated for the Best Director for Hugo, which is also in the running for the Best Film and Best Original Score (Howard Shore). The Help has been nominated in several categories too including Best Film (Drama), Best Actress (Viola Davis) and Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer). War Horse, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Midnight In Paris, The Artist, My Week With Marilyn, Carnage are the other films in the running for several other categories.

Michael Fassbender for Shame and Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar are the other favourites for the Best Actor nomination, as is Meryl Streep for the Best Actress category for Iron Lady. Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, Rooney Mara for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Tilda Swinton for We Need To Talk About Kevin are the other actresses nominated in the Best Actress category, drama. While Jodie Foster for Carnage, Charlize Theron for Young Adult, Kristen Wiig for Bridesmaids, Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn and Kate Winslet for Carnage are nominated for the Best Actress category in Comedy or Musical.
