George Clooney steals the Golden Globes

Actor George Clooney was definitely the star of the evening at the 12th Golden Globe awards that were telecast live on VH1. The actor not only came out tops as the best actor (Drama) but very few actors, and only Clooney are expected to do this – the star took a dig (in a lighter vein of course) in his acceptance speech at fellow nominee Michael Fassbender who has created quite a stir with his bold portrayal in the film Shame.

“I’d like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal-nudity responsibility that I had. If you can play golf like this, with your hands behind your back—go for it man, do it!” said Clooney in his acceptance speech before he went on to thank his director. The guests and nominees who were  seen whispering to each other during other ‘thank you’ speeches,  were listening to him in stunned silence. Let’s move on to the lady who was an expected winner and continued to defend her title as the actor who has won the maximum number of Globes – Meryl Streep as the Best Actress (drama) for her role in Iron Lady.

Even though she apparently forgot to carry her reading glasses on  stage, she didn’t commit any faux-pas in her speech. Clutching her previous eight trophies in hand, Streep thanked the actors who had won the award before her. She had a few particularly good words reserved for her former colleague and co-runner for the awards, Viola Davis who had acted with her in the film Doubt. Davis was considered the only competition to Streep after her portrayal of Aibileen Clark in The Help. “I love you Viola. You’re my girl,” Streep said among other things.

After the prominent presences, here are the two prominent absentees at the Globes who seemed to be the talk of the town – first is upcoming star Ryan Gosling who was nominated twice this year for Crazy Stupid, Love and The Ides of March. Though word was out that he was shooting for a film, he, of course, made a few tongues wag because his co-star George Clooney seemed to be there everywhere.

The other one is of course Woody Allen who was also one of the few actors who didn’t come on stage to receive his award for the best screenplay (Midnight in Paris).
