Delhi is India’s top market for sales: Puneet Nanda

Puneet Nanda, the creative engine behind a leading fashion brand, showcases in Delhi and as well as in Mumbai.

However, he prefers the capital over the financial hub by crediting it as the biggest market for sales.

“Delhi is India’s top market for sales. Those who learn to sell here will make a strong base to grow in India,” says Puneet, who is showcasing at the ongoing India fashion week in Delhi.

The veteran fashion guru also urges the organisers and designers participating in fashion weeks to have a clear cut objective to see the number of buyers swell. The Indian fashion scene has for long been panned for not being able to tap into the A-list international buyers which to date gives our fashion event a miss.

“We will never have a really superb buyer turnout here in India till designers and the organisers clarify the goal of the fashion week. If it is to raise awareness and the market in India or to sell to mature western declining markets - the approach/arrangements, shows/products have to be geared thus,” he says.

Puneet adds with an anecdote, “For example, I know that I don’t want to sell to a department store in Europe or America - I focus on the Indian market as I have 36 stores and 250 dealers. I don’t even need to show at fashion week. But if I did decide to create for such buyers, there aren’t enough buyers to dramatically grow and sell at this week.”

He also says that 2010 will be a great year for sales in Delhi or across India for the luxury and lifestyle market. “In India, there was a recessionary period more from a prudence and cautious spending. The fear’s behind us - unless we have an unforeseen happening that dampens the spirit, we are looking at a great year of sales ahead,” he ends.
