Curtain call for Kalki Koechlin

Actress Kalki Koechlin reveals why she keeps returning to theatre, despite her happening Bollywood innings.

Curtain call for Kalki Koechlin

It’s been quite a while since actress Kalki Koechlin was last seen on the big screen, but it seems like she’s all set to make up for it in the coming few months.

The pretty actress is gearing up for her Bollywood outing this year first with Shaitan and then with the Zoya Akhtar road movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. In the meanwhile however, keeping her maha-busy are her theatre commitments as the actress is currently busy with her play Hamlet, where she plays vital roles, that of Ophelia and also of a jester.

Having wrapped up the shooting of Akhtar’s film early this year, Koechlin says that it’s difficult for her to not keep returning to theatre.

“Performing live in front of an audience is a completely different experience as compared to acting in front of the cameras,” she shares.

“Doing theatre makes me come alive,” adds Koechlin about her first love. So does she prefer one over the other? “It’s not fair to compare the two. I hope I never have to choose between the two,” she laughs.

“Films have their own charm. And to be honest, I cherish the experiences of working in both, films and theatre.” Having worked in films like Dev D, That Girl in Yellow Boots and Emotional Atyachar earlier, Koechlin reveals that she is excited about her foray in mainstream cinema with Zindagi…

“It’s exciting to work in the Bollywood filmy format, but personally, I don’t look at categorising films. I either want to do them or don’t. The story and the film-maker are my criteria for selecting a film,” says the actress. And do boyfriend Anurag Kashyap’s films get first preference? “Certainly. Anurag’s top priority too,” concludes Koechlin.
