Christina Aguilera released after her arrest for public intoxication

Christina Aguilera has been released from police custody after she was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday for being drunk in public.

A Los Angeles sheriff's spokesperson said the 30-year-old singer was a passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend Matthew Rutler in West Hollywood when police pulled him over for driving erratically at around 2.45 am on Tuesday, reports the Daily Mail.

Aguilera was taken into custody because she ‘was not capable of taking care of herself’, he added.

Rutler, 25, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was released from jail on 30,000-dollars bail.

Aguilera, mother of one, hid her face as she was driven home from the West Hollywood police station at 7.30am.

“It was kind of a unique situation with this law as she was not capable of taking care of herself. She was incapacitated,” said Steve Whitmore, the chief public information officer for the Los Angeles Sheriffs department.

“When she got out of the car, she couldn't stand. We had to help her stand. She didn't know where she was and she didn't know her own address. We took her into custody for her own protection,” he added.

Whitmore said the Sheriff's department had no intention of pressing charges on the singer but noted that she would have an arrest record.

The arrest is the latest in a series of publicly humiliating moments for the singer.
