For film buffs with a soft corner for British main stream cinema, From Blighty with love — the UK film council British film festival is just for you.

The festival that started on Friday and continues till March 18, showcases seven new British independent films, none of which have been shown to the cinema-going public in India before.

Sarah McKenzie, the UK film council’s senior executive for export development said, “The seven films that are part of the festival are widely acclaimed and have won international awards at various film festivals. All the films have a unique approach to storytelling.”

Shekhar Kapur, joint project patron, producer and Oscar-nominated director, says, “I recommend this package of excellent movies, and believe there is something in there for everybody.”

The films part of this 14-day festival will be shown in cinemas in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi simultaneously at the 10pm night show slot. The organisers zeroed in on a night show to make it convenient for busy professionals.

“Our modus operandi is different. We will have live one-on-one interaction with the film directors through video conversation. Simultaneously, audiences in all the three cities will be able to view each other and engage in a video chat,” McKenzie explains.

The films
Film festivals like these are a boost to independent filmmakers. One of the films to be screened is director Sally Potter’s Rage, the story of a boy who films a series of interviews with a New York fashion house on his mobile phone. But when he posts the material on the internet, the consequences are catastrophic. Like Potter, director of Glorious 39, Stephen Poliakoff, is excited about his film being screened in India. It was earlier selected for the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
