Boys don't watch love stories: Rahul Bose

He has played characters that every woman adores. And actor Rahul Bose loves that bit. “Boys don’t watch love stories. It is the women who drive the audience to such films. Guys don’t mind accompanying them. So, I love doing films on relationships, which bring in the audience,” says Rahul, who awaits the release of another such film — Kucch Luv Jaisaa.

Bose says, “Each of my characters has struck a particular chord with the women audience. Be it my role in Mr & Mrs Iyer, where girls got thinking ‘what if’ and ‘if only’ or the complete jerk in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, where girls have known such guys in their lives.

Then my role in The Japanese Wife had all girls sighing ‘I wish a guy loved me like that’. The reason is, women love to share their emotions, men on the other hand, prefer to act simple even though they’re complicated.”

Probe him further and he says, “Men are like that. They don’t want to share their feelings or talk about emotional issues. I recently found out about a friend of mine who has been living apart from his wife and kid because of his extra marital affair only through a newspaper report. When I call him, he behaves like his world is completely alright. That’s the problem with men.”

Brushing aside relationships, Bose excitedly talks about Deepa Mehta’s onscreen adaptation of Midnight’s Children, Winds Of Change. “This will be the biggest Indian film ever in history. It is going to be the first ever arthouse film to have an opening weekend. This is something unheard of. This is only because the book was a bestseller in 42 countries,” says Bose, who can’t stop gushing about the cast of this film that he’s just finished shooting for.

“There’s Shabana (Azmi), Seema (Biswas), Shahana (Goswami), Siddharth, who will hit the big league with his role, there’s also Ranvir (Shorey) and Vinay (Pathak), amongst others. I play this character called Zulfikar, a general. My wife in the film is this extremely talented actor called Anita Majumdar. I can finally talk about it officially,” says Rahul, who until recently used to refer to this film on Twitter as “the film that can’t be named”.

Bose also has two new films on hand. “One is called Traveling with Mohammad, which is about the Hindu-Muslim divide. This film is directed by Arun Asthana and also stars Om Puri. Then there is Jeene Do, which is written and directed by Varun Malhotra. I like to work with writer-directors, because I can shoot questions to the same person,” says he.

And there’s good news too, as he reveals, “I’m just done with writing my script and will direct a film by early next year. I also have Moth Smoke, my script that has been lying around for a while. So, you’d either get to see that or my new script.” Now, isn’t that good.
