Bohemian rhapsody!

Dancer Isha Sharvani, who will be seen in a Broadway-style musical soon, talks about living life on her own terms and those rumours of a friendship with politician Rahul Gandhi.

Bohemian rhapsody!

Her laughter is infectious, and when you watch her pirouette, fly and float through her dance performances, it’s as though the pixie-built artiste brings poetry in motion to the stage.

It’s easy for Isha Sharvani, the daughter of danseuse Daksha Seth who has become a global name, is now gearing up for her own show — India’s first mega Broadway-style musical. “It’s never been done before, a dream come true!” she exuberates. Isha will be the lead performer for the musical to be held at Gurgaon (north India), this June.

For someone who has followed her own heart, she’s confident of the musical fitting into her scheme of things. Like she did when she left school and spent her formative years in Kerala at the institution set up by her parents.

“My mother is very independent. She once left home with me when I was just one to learn the martial art of Chhau and we survived on just the basics for a few days — I take after her. By 14, I knew dancing was at the centre of my gravity and I loved it,” says Isha.
Her short tryst with Bollywood hasn’t been a dampener either.

Isha’s day is packed with 12-hour practice sessions and she’s able to cope up due to her own upbringing. “I’ve had a very unconventional childhood — disciplined to the point of being difficult,” she admits. “I had no friends and was either practicing or studying. Sometimes, it felt tough, but you have to make sacrifices,” she states.

And what about following her heart in the other sense? “Well, I have had my share of crushes, silent ones,” she laughs. Talk of her ‘friendship’ rumours with a certain Mr Rahul Gandhi that surfaced a while back, and she quashes them. “They’re baseless. I have no plans in life right now, I’m content with my world,” ends Isha.
