For decades, Amitabh Bachchan has been a silent philanthropist. But DNA spotted him this Sunday playing father figure to around 42 intellectually-challenged adults who are, in fact, his neighbours. They are all residents of Dilkhush Shelter, located near his Juhu residence. Bachchan spent over half an hour with these special people, signing autographs, getting keepsake pictures clicked, lending a patient ear to what thay had to say and even going through the knick- knacks they had made for a sale. Bachchan was so moved by their enthusiasm that he pledged lifelong support to Dilkhush Shelter.

Sister Monica, who runs the establishment, later told DNA, “To these people, Bachchan is a father figure, an idol. For long they have wished to meet him. We approached Mr Bachchan and were pleasantly surprised when he readily agreed to come and spend time with them. The children had the time of their life and are so thankful to Bachchan for fulfilling their wish. They have prayed for not just for his, but for his entire family’s good health and success. Our wards had made different things with the craft training they learnt at our house and excitedly showed him everything. He must have been very touched with their love because when he was about to leave, he told us that he is pledging lifelong help to us. He told us to approach him any time if the shelter needed anything. That shows how big a heart he has.”
