With hundreds of reality shows springing up on TV, nobody knows what’s actually going to work. Rajiv Lakshman has made a clear shift of channels — from MTV to Channel V — to host a new show inspired by the popular show Unan1mous — yet another show that has been inspired from the West and adapted to suit Indian audiences.
V The Player, as it will be titled, will feature inmates locked up in a house together performing an array of tasks. The last one to survive will take home the money. But here’s the twist — instead of voting a person out, contestants are supposed to vote for a player (other than themselves) and the game ends only when all the contestants unanimously vote for one player.
Even Rajiv is not sure how this format will work. “I don’t know. You can’t predict human behaviour even when you work out all permutations and combinations,” he says.
Interestingly, the money reduces by the minute until the choice is unanimous. So there is a chance that money will turn to naught by the time there is a winner. “No, there will be a definite winner and we have worked out a system to make sure that at least some amount of money is left in the kitty,” clarifies Rajiv who is excited to see the response to his new show which is hugely different from his earlier Roadies.
So why did he shift loyalties and move to a rival channel? “I have a great rapport with MTV. I have worked with them for over 10 years. But my production house makes shows for various channels. So there is no question about shifting loyalties."
