Abhay Deol roots for a camera-friendly cause

Abhay Deol recently unveiled his philanthropic side.

The actor, who is the brand ambassador of an organisation called Video Volunteers, is teaching people how to wield the camera to highlight issues concerning the society and environment. Members of the group shoot short films to bring such issues to the fore.

Abhay says, “This group teaches underprivileged people to bring out issues using the audio/visual medium. These days news channels prioritise what is to be shown and they are driven by business modules. But in the process many relevant issues get lost. For example, news channels might not be interested in showing how in an Indian village the water problem is such that even today people walk miles to get it. This is where the group and its members come in.”

After making the short films, the group will take them to various news channels in India. Abhay says, “We hope that they telecast such news. We have 175 producers working with villagers, slum dwellers and other people in India who don’t have the infrastructure to voice their problems.”
