Film: Yatchan

Director: Vishnuvardhan
Cast: Arya, Kreshna, Swathi Reddy, Deepa Sannidhi, Adil Hussain, Thambi Ramaiah
Rating: 2.5 stars

What's it about:
Director Vishnuvardhan, who is known for his slick films, has ventured into action comedy with Yatchan. Based on a story by dialogue writers Subha that appeared in the Tamil magazine Vikatan, the director worked with Subha to translate it onto the silverscreen.

The story is about the lives of two young men from two different towns in Tamil Nadu get intertwined when they both land up in Chennai. Chinna (Arya) seeks refuge in Chennai after committing a murder in Thoothukudi while Karthik (Kreshna) comes to the city to fulfil his dreams of becoming a big movie star. In Chennai, Chinna is hired by aspiring politician Vetri’s (Adil Hussain) man (Thambi Ramaiah) to murder a young nurse (Deepa Sannidhi) who can predict the future. Meanwhile, Karthik, who’s in love with Deepa (Swathi Reddy), is selected for a role in director Suryah’s film. How do Chinna and Karthik end up meeting?  What happens next?

What’s Hot:
Arya and Kreshna are adequate in the roles they are given to play –the former is a typical local guy who loves to drink and gamble and the latter is a movie-crazy one who lives and breathes cinema. Director Vishnuvardhan has ensured their roles are quite distinct and has etched out the roles of Adil Hussain and Thambi Ramaiah quite well.
Swathi Reddy and Deepa Sannidhi are not just mere glam props and add value to the story so it is quite refreshing. The scenes between Kreshna and Swathi are quite cute and this actress is a delight to watch on screen. One must mention National Award winner Thambi Ramaiah and his impeccable sense of comic timing and dialogue delivery – he just seems to get better with every film. Adil Hussain has done a commendable job in the film considering he doesn’t speak Tamil.

What’s Not:
The movie is touted as an action comedy and it has both action and comedy - but the storyline is really not gripping. It’s a simple case of mistaken identity and what happens when the two men (Arya and Kreshna) end up meeting. Though Vishnuvardhan has added some twists here and there to keep the audience guessing, the movie drags in parts and the screenplay falters. Considering the previous films the director has made, one expected much more from him and this film.
The music by Yuvan Shankar Raja suits the script but then again, you don’t remember a single tune as you leave the theatre.

What To Do:
Watch the film if you want to see a few good performances and have some laughs.
