Warner Bros released the second trailer for Wonder Woman on Thursday and it is even better than the first. The first trailer for the first-ever female superhero film left fans with the hope that it would not disappoint, unlike previous DC films starring Batman, Superman and the golden-hearted anti-heroes of Suicide Squad. The second one, however, surpasses the best of expectations with its stunning photography, action choreography and hints of comedy.

The trailer for the Wonder Woman, which will trace the origins of the superhero, begins in the modern era as Wonder Woman looks at a digital print of her photo from World War I. DC fans will remember seeing this in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Pay close attention to the note bearing the logo of Wayne Enterprises next to it.

“I used to want to save the world, this beautiful place. But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within,” she says. (Hurray for female angst!) Cut to 100 years ago, where the camera looks over Diana Prince's shoulder as she stands watching Steven Trevor's (Chris Pine) plane crash into the waters that surround the Amazonian island of Themyscira.

As war reaches the shores of this mythical island, Diana dons her armour to walk into the trenches and fight for peace as Wonder Woman.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer is a mini film in itself. From the azure blues and ochre yellows of the island to watercolour blues and smokey blacks of World War II, the film has a rich palette. Several shots are made exquisite using the slow motion effect- Wonder Woman walking out of the trenches into the battlefield, deflecting bullets with her bracelets, fighting the villain with her lasso of truth.

Watch the trailer:

The scene where she deflects a bullet from hitting Trevor is seen as a reference to a similar scene involving Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the 1978 film Superman. Where do those bullets ricochet to?

Another scene references Batman's entry in BvS.

Possible villains in the film include the woman in the half-face mask, played by Elena Enaya, who some speculate could be Dr Poison, and the German army general played by Danny Huston, who could also be Ares, the god of war. It's not clear if these two characters are working together.

"Weapons far the deadlier than you can ever imagine" are being made to use in the war, a hint of chemical warfare in the fumes emanating from test tubes in the army lab.

The film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Lucy Davis Danny Huston and David Thewlis and releases on June 2, 2017.
