Will the underperformance of Akira affect Sonakshi’s Noor?

So far, Sonakshi scored big hits in hero-oriented films like Rowdy Rathore and Dabangg. Her last three films have crashed at the box-office. It would be no understatement to state Sonakshi counted on Akira to take her career to the next level.

Unlike Ram Madhavani’s Neerja which gathered momentum at the box-office with each passing day, Akira has been on a downhill spiral from the word ‘go’. The film is expected to be a box-office failure, thereby putting a question mark on Sonakshi Sinha’s viability as a ‘hero’.

So far, Sonakshi scored big hits in hero-oriented films like Rowdy Rathore and Dabangg. Her last three films have crashed at the box-office. It would be no understatement to state Sonakshi counted on Akira to take her career to the next level.

This was not to be. Though Akira is not as big a loser as some other recent films featuring female heroes such as Calendar Girls and Angry Indian Goddesses, it would still require a concerted consolidation to break even at the boxoffice.

Naturally, Sonakshi’s next female-centric vehicle Noor where she plays a Pakistani journalist will have to face the repercussions of her misfired hero-giri, since films with female heroes in the lead are in any case seen to be dicey  at the box-office.

Says trade analyst Amod Mehra, “Here in Bollywood,  the stars are rated by his or her last film’s performance. After the failure of Akira, Sonakshi’s next, Noor, will find the going tough as her  ratings as a solo star  will hit rock-bottom.”

However, Vikram Malhotra, producer of Noor,  who helms  Abundantia Entertainment is not deterred by Akira’s box-office performance. “To begin with, I don’t think a `15-16 crore weekend is bad news for Akira! And Akira’s success or failure will have no impact on Noor. The two films are completely different and the draw of Noor is its story and slice-of-life characters. In any case, this business of cross-multiplication of films is out of the window years ago. Don’t you think that the audience has moved beyond star value and judges each film on its own merit and appeal?”
