Rajkummar Rao's  film Newton has been chosen as India's Official entry to the Oscars. The film has just released in the cinema halls and has been critically acclaimed.

Rajkummar Rao, when contacted, said, "I am very happy and excited with the news that Newton is India's official entry. The film has opened today in the cinemas and we have been getting an amazing response from the audience and now this news is a double celebration for us.''

It may be recalled here that Rajkummar Rao's film Shahid was one of the nominations for India's official entry in 2013. Both, director Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao were disappointed that the film was not chosen. Rao said, "I really don't know what had happened but we are very proud of Shahid. Shahid has given us so much in life. We can never ever forget that. It didn't make it but we still very proud of the film. Now Newton is there and we will try and do everything to make it to the list."

Mother India was India's first submission for the Oscars in 1957 and it also made it to the final nominations Salaam Bombay in 1998 and Lagaan in 2001 were also shortlisted for the final list but didn't win. Last year, National award-winning film Visarnai, directed by Vetrimaaran, was submitted for the Oscars but failed to get a nomination.
