Lately, Akshay Kumar has been experimenting quite a lot with his roles. While some films like Baby and Holiday are still loved by the audiences, other attempts like It's Entertainment, Boss and OUATIMD haven't received the expected response from the masses. With Gabbar is Back hitting theatres this week, expectations have sky rocketed. But will Gabbar manage to bring in the numbers? Will it go the Holiday route? Or will it be as dull as It's Entertainment?

Remember Akshay's highest grossing film? Yes, it was Rowdy Rathore- yet another commercial masala film, made for the Indian masses at large. Gabbar, which deals with the sensitive issue of corruption and features Akshay as the leader of a vigilante group, too has its moments. Akshay delivers a startling performance and commands huge hold throughout. but the major slips in the supporting cast and the screenplay add to the jitters. Last time, we saw Akshay doing a successful out and out action entertainer was in RR. He tried his hand at the same genre, taking up a Boss and a Khiladi 786 but he could never repeat the Rowdy Rathore success ever.

And ever since then, Akshay has become experimental. Known for doing three-four films in a year when most of his contemporaries stick to doing one or two films (maximum!), Akshay understood that trying out the same age old formula of remaking a South film and Bollywoodising it will not get him success every time. He did a Special 26, OMG; Oh My God and received huge critical responses. Akshay was yet again back on track. But the 100 crore hero was still yearning for that one big film.

Three more films bombed post OMG and Akshay started shuffling his choices again when Murgadoss offered him Holiday. Finally, he had another 100 crore film to his name! But Holiday, despite being another action entertainer, was more content driven than being rather mindless. With Gabbar's promos and marketing strategies doing the trick, audiences are anticipating yet another content driven Bolly flick, laced with some dhishoom-dhishoom and the usual Bollywood masala. The film, high on euphoria, might as well be the first box office blockbuster of the year. Only if things go right.

2015 so far has been witness to some brave experiments working wonders at the box office but if you talk about figures, the BO numbers have been considerably lower than other years. With just 4 hits in a span of 4 months (Badlapur, NH10, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Hunterrr) and all of them being small budgeted films that came along with huge risks attached, 2015 has definitely been a dull year for movie lovers so far. Akshay's Baby, inspite of being loved by the audiences could not cross the 100 crore mark.

As of now, the highest figures so far are of Baby, which had a lifetime collections of over Rs 95 crore. But it's Ranbir Kapoor- Jacqueline Fernandes- Arjun Kapoor starrer Roy which has the highest opening in 2015. Roy opened with Rs 10.40 crore, beating Akshay's Baby as well. But the first day occupancy of Gabbar is Back is extremely promising and the film, in all probabilities will break the highest opening day record of 2015 held by Roy and might as well go on to beat the lifetime collections of Akshay's previous best this year.
