Whizzing past on the yellow scooter

From the man who has directed stage hits like Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, comes another thought-provoking production, Peele Scooter Wala Admi. The play revolves around life and its nuances, while exploring the relationship between a father and son.

Manav Kaul, who has also written the play, says he has been hugely inspired by writers of Hindi language like Nirmal Verma and Vinod Kumar Shukla, and has adopted a poetic dialogue style for his play that is similar to the kind of language these stalwarts have explored in their works. The play tells the story of a short story writer whose past comes down to haunt his present. After several failed attempts at creative writing, the writer ultimately picks up the pen to weave an autobiography.

The director seems to have experimented with the style of narrative in the play. He says, “We are quite used to reading and listening to a certain kind of stories. Here, I have tried to experiment with the whole idea of storytelling.”

Like several other productions of the genre, Peele Scooter Wala Admi is kept as an open-ended play. The director explains, “For the audience, exploring self and reminiscing about the past may not pose to be a big problem. But to me it is quite significant and that is why I have kept the story open-ended, to be interpreted as the audience wants.”

So where does the ‘yellow scooter’ figure in the series of events that revolves around serious subjects like exploring relationships and dealing with the darker side of life?

Kaul says the vehicle is the surprise element of the play. So take a ride on Kaul’s yellow scooter and enjoy an evening of poetry and some soul searching. 

The cast consists of Kumud Mishra, Sadiya Sidiqqui, Satyajeet Sharma, Gopal Tiwari and Manav Kaul. The play will be staged at the Prithvi Theatre on November 26.
