A film doing well at the box office is good news, not just because it makes big moolah, but it also increases the possibility of cashing in on the sequel mania that’s hit Bollywood. And though in most cases the hero of the movie continues to star in the franchise, the heroine gets the boot. Many times it’s the script that demands the change, while often it’s need for a ‘fresh face’ that leads to this swap. And in movies where they retain the original heroine, new leading ladies are added to spice up the starcast. Here are some sequels that have seen the ladies either making way for newer girls or sharing screen space with other actresses...

Film: Golmaal
Original actress: Rimi Sen
Replaced by: Kareena Kapoor khan
Why:
While the first movie that released in 2006 had Rimi in it, the movie’s roaring success at the BO sure had the A-list actresses eyeing the sequel. Golmaal Returns starred Kareena and went on to be a bigger hit in 2008. The actress managed to hold on to the coveted franchise when the next instalment released in 2010. She is expected to be a part of the next film too, but Rohit Shetty hasn’t announced the final star cast yet. And there’s many a slip between the cup and the lip, right?

Koi Mil Gaya
Original actress: Preity Zinta
Replaced by:
Priyanka Chopra in Krrish 2 and also had Kangana Ranaut in Krrish 3
Why: While Preity was seen in the version where Jaadu came to meet Rohit in KMG, it was Priyanka who played Rohit’s son and superhero Krrish’s love interest in the second film. Though Priyanka did find a place in Krrish 3, Kangana rocked the movie as Kaya. The next movie will definitely be made, but it remains to be seen whether PC continues to be Krrish’s love interest.

Dhoom
Original actress: Esha Deol
Replaced by:
Bipasha Basu, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Katrina Kaif
Why: Esha sizzled on the screen in Dhoom, but there was no scope for her character in the next instalment. Aishwarya revamped her good-girl image by upping her glam quotient opposite Hrithik. The third instalment now has Katrina dancing to the Dhoom tune.

Don
Original actresses: Priyanka Copra and Isha Koppikar
Replaced by:
Priyanka was seen in Don 2 as well, but Isha was replaced by Lara Dutta
Why: While Priyanka continued to play the tough cop in the Don series, Isha was replaced by a more-in-demand Lara in Don 2. Don 3 is been contemplated, will Roma get to chase Don again?

Dostana
Original actress: Priyanka Chopra
Replaced by: Actresses yet to be announced
Why:
Five years after audience gave a thumbs up to Dostana, the sequel is yet to take off.

Priyanka, who was the object of Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham’s affection in the movie, walked away with Bobby Deol in the end. It was only natural this time they would find a new girl to swoon over this time around. While reports claimed that Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone were in the running for the role, Dharma productions or director Tarun Mansukhani haven’t made any official announcement.

Race
Original actresses: Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Sameera Reddy
Replaced by:
Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ameesha Patel
Why: Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor were the only players from the original movie who were retained in the sequel. While Race had Bipasha and Katrina , Race 2 had Deepika and Jacqueline. Sameera was replaced by Ameesha as Anil’s secretary. With the movie doing well at the box office, the next instalment of the franchise is definitely on the cards. Let’s see whether these girls manage to retain their pole positions.

Munnabhai MBBS
Original actress: Gracy Singh
Replaced by: Vidya Balan
Why:
The changing storyline saw Gracy being replaced with the more-popular Vidya in the sequel of Munnabhai MBBS. Of course, Munnabhai and Circuit stayed put.

Ishqiya
Original actress: Vidya Balan
Replaced by: Madhuri Dixit Nene
Why:
While Vidya replaced Gracy in the Munnabhai series, she was replaced with Madhuri in Dedh Ishqiya. Wonder if the sequel will explain Vidya’s absence in it.

Dabangg
Original actress: Sonakshi Sinha
Not replaced
Why:
Sonakshi, who made her Bollywood debut with Dabangg, continued to romance Chulbul Pandey in the sequel too. Salman recently said that they have a plot for the next instalment of the franchise, and they are working on the script. Let’s see if Sona, who seems to be much-in-demand in B-Town, bags this one too.

Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster
Original actress: Mahie Gill
Addition to the cast: Soha Ali Khan
Why:
While Mahie reprised her role in the sequel, Soha was added to the cast. Though there are plans for another movie in the series, it seems to have been put on the back burner as director Tigmanshu Dhulia was caught up with his other projects.
