It’s a question we posed to the veterans, some established artistes and the new kids on both the Bollywood and indie blocks. And it was a simple question about the place music has in their lives. What it means to them? Can they imagine a life without it? Predictability was to be expected, but it’s the words they put their thoughts across in, that says a lot about how seriously they take their passion and craft.

Not that we need them to prove it. This here is just a celebration of music and what it means to musicians and singers across the board. Some say it’s life, some say it’s more than just that, others still say it’s what defines them. Here’s looking....

Anup Jalota: Just as there is no life in one’s body without one’s soul, in the same way, if there is no music in my life, that’s the moment when my life ends.

Talat Aziz: For me, music is pure and spiritual.. When I am down or tired, it helps rejuvenate my energies. Physical emotional as well as spiritual. Music, not noise.

Mitali Singh; Music is oxygen to me. Riyaaz, composing, etc. are connected but I need music when I cook, travel, etc. Everything I do, it’s through these seven notes.

Ankit Tiwari; Music is fuel. It gives me the energy to wake up everyday and create.... It turns pain into something beautiful that people can connect to.

Shefali Alvares: Music is in the moment. It is my sanity on earth. My happy place and my soul. It is the speech of angels bringing us closer to the Divine.

Aditi Singh Sharma: To me, music is an extension of who I am. And from my earliest days, apart from my mother, music is the only thing that has been a part of my life.

Siddharth Mahadevan: Music means the world to me.I express myself through my music so it’s a source of inspiration and expression. It makes me feel alive.

Akriti Kakar: Music is.... the next best thing after my life, I believe. When I’m low, the only thing that get me up, is music. Music is pretty much who I am and want to be.

Delhi Sultanate: I construct my identity through music. I don’t recognise the concept of the nation state. Through music I can be a part of an imagined community.

Nirmika Singh: To me, music is a refuge where I build fantasies, destruct enemies, guilt-trip about debaucheries and fall in love.  Without music, my life would be a sad story.

Shipra Goyal: It’s life to me. It’s everything. Because it’s with me when I wake up and when I go to sleep. It’s something I indulge in daily. I was born with it and I will die with it.

Sohrab Nicholson: It’s meditation. It’s meditative to listen to, and it’s meditative to play. I believe most people can switch their brains off when immersed in a musical
experience.
