Lately Sushant Singh Rajput has been at the receiving-end for walking out of his mentor Abhishek Kapoor’s next film Fitoor, based on Great Expectations. While Gattu launched the actor in Kai Po Che, Singh opted for a Yash Raj film.

Says Sushant. “Let me tell you the truth about Abhishek’s film Fitoor. I had kept aside a large chunk of this year for it. I haven’t shot for any film during the last four months. Abhishek and I had kept aside five months of my time for Fitoor. It was supposed to be shot this year. Then it got postponed to the next year. Is that my fault?”

Sushant protests against the insinuations that he let down his mentor for Yashraj Films. “I didn’t sign any film for this year after Fitoor. Except Dibakar Bannerjee’s Byomkesh and Shekhar Kapoor’s Paani both for next year. So basically I am without shooting because Fitoor got postponed. I am prepping for Byomkesh, but no shooting. I am sure there’s a logical reason for the delay. But there’s no logical reason for making me out to be the villain of the plot. The new dates for Fitoor clashed with the dates that I’ve already assigned to Paani, so no point in even thinking about.”

The actor adds that  he and Abhishek Kapoor are still friends. “There is absolutely no stress between us. Very honestly, we are on very good terms. Of course, we were disappointed that we couldn’t work together. But things are just fine between us now. We exchange texts and have promised to work together at the earliest. So sorry to disappoint those who are looking for a fight.

People just see me as the guy who didn’t do the film of the director who launched him. They don’t know how much I wanted to be part of it.”

As for his proximity to Yashraj, Sushant protests, “It wasn’t planned that way. It just happened that I ended up doing Shudh Desi Romance and now Paani for Yashraj. They are offering me the kind of films that I want to do.” He feels blessed. “I am working with the filmmakers I’ve always dreamt of... what more could I want? I seriously don’t know what is working in my favour. I am in a confused state of mind. But it’s welcome confusion. I’ve worked very hard to get here. I gave my blood and sweat to theatre for five years. But I know hard work is not all. I am lucky. Directors like Dibakar and Shekhar Kapoor have great expectations from me. That both scares and thrills me.”
