Watch trailer: Is Emily Blunt's 'The Girl on the Train' this year's 'Gone Girl'?

Universal released the first trailer for the thriller The Girl on the Train on Wednesday. The film is based on based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling novel of the same name and stars Emily Blunt in the lead role.

Blunt has said that this is “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done.” The actress spoke to Deadline about the film and said, “I just love that it’s about addiction and loneliness and voyeurism and what we think we see and don’t see. I think it’s very relatable. We’ve all ridden the train to work and wondered about the lives of the people on the train, and I think that people relate to that.”

The trailer's mood is similar to that of 2014 film Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, a comparison that has been made of the book as well. The film is directed by Tate Taylor of The Help fame.

Here is the synopsis of the film:

"In the thriller, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds."

The film's cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon. The Girl on the Train will release in October 2016.
