After much teasing, the trailer for the spectacle called Valerian and the City of Thousand Planets is out now and boy, it looks amazing.

Based on the 1960s-era French comic book, the film chronicles the adventure of Valerian, a time-travelling hero, played by Dane DeHaan and his love interest Laurine, played by Cara Delevingne.

According to the synopsis:

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.

Under a directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

The trailer will give you feels of James Cameron's Avatar with the aliens with glowing ponytails. Then there are creatures resembling Jaba the Hutt from Star Wars universe. There are a few frames that might remind you of the Tron series and a few that of Star Trek.

There is one frame that might stay with you. Rihanna being all 'Mystique-y', changing everything about her from, her hair colour, cut, to the clothes on her body in a blink of an eye!

Put them together, you have Valerian which from the looks of it promises to be a spectacle you wouldn't want to miss in July 2017.

From the creator of Lucy and The Fifth Element, writer-director Luc Besson, the movie strives to go beyond what James Cameron attempted. In fact, at New York Comic-Con, he told the reporters that after watching Avatar, he threw the script of Valerian in the garbage because he thought it was not at that level. He said that he was right to throw it out because now the reworked outcome is much better.

The trailer echoes director's words.

The movie also stars Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, and Kris Wu in pivotal roles.
