Watch | NBA's Bollywood connection: Cheerleaders perform on 'Ghoomar' song from 'Padmaavat'

As the controversy over Bollywood film 'Padmaavat' raged, many districts even banned the performance on the Ghoomar song of Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial period drama. While in India, violent protesters attacked a Madhya Pradesh school after students performed on 'Ghoomar', the song has become a cultural hit in the United States. 

In a testimony to the popularity of the song, the cheerleaders during an NBA basketball game recently performed at Ghoomar. 

 

In a video uploaded on YouTube, cheerleaders can be seen dancing on Ghoomar during a match between Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat. Although it is not clear when the video was recorded but it was published on January 30.

Charlotte Hornets played a home match against Miami Heats on January 20 and January 27. NBA franchise Charlotte Hornets is owned by basketball star Michael Jordan. 

As cheerleaders grooved on the number, spectators cheered with whistles and claps.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, Padmaavat is based on the saga of the battle between Maharaja Ratan Singh of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.

 

Released on January 25, the film had generated huge controversy as Rajput groups protested against the film. They alleged that the film, set in 13th century, distorts history. 

Even the playing of songs was protested by Rajput groups including Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena. 

Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav was warned after a video of her dancing on the song went viral.

Some members of Karni Sena allegedly attacked a school in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district after the students performed on the Ghoomar song from Padmaavat during their Annual Day function.

Later, an administrative official in Rajasthan's Udaipur issued a circular to district education officers to not perform on the Ghoomar song of the period drama at cultural programmes on Republic Day.

 

Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (Mewar) had requested through a memorandum to not perform on Ghoomar song and play the song on Republic Day in schools, colleges and other institutions, which "may result into untoward incident."

Following which, district administration issued a circular to the DEOs to act appropriately and direct all government or private school principals in the district in this regard, the order read.
