They dared to tread an unconventional path, and for many of our celebrities, it meant compromising on scholastic pursuits.

“I have always wanted to finish my education. Though I do not regret my decision to discontinue studies, I realise that I might have missed out on something,” says model-turned-actor Bipasha Basu. Though she quit college in her second year, Bipasha says it’s “never too late” to learn. “Once I’m through with my work and can afford to  devote time, I will definitely pursue a course in filmmaking,” she adds.

When decisions like quitting studies need to be taken by the lack of choice, it easier said than done.

Says Jackie, who quit school at the intermediate level, “I could not waste my parents’ money for four whole years. I needed to earn something myself and so I joined a garment factory. I did films much later.”
Ask him whether he would ever want to resume his education and he quips, “The streets of Mumbai have taught me to live. Nevertheless, I would want to learn to play some musical instrument.”

Tabu, who hails from a family of academicians, says she faced a lot of pressure when she quit college to do her own thing.

“My grandmother was a teacher for 45 years and therefore my dropping became an issue. But I am proud that I could live up to their expectations. If possible, I hope to resume my classical signing lessons,” she says earnestly.

Ironically, the younger lot like singer Sunidhi Chauhan and actor Ayesha Takia who discontinued studies right after schooling, have no qualms about not being graduates. “I quit because I did not feel like studying. I made the decision to pursue my dream as a singer and I don’t regret it one bit,” asserts Sunidhi. Be it academics or art, ultimately there is nothing more satisfying than doing something you are passionate about!
