December is a popular month for gigs, events and festivals pertaining to music, food and other creative arts. And if traveling out of the city for a couple of days is playing on your mind, then perhaps, you could head to New Delhi. The reason being, the fourth edition of UnBox 2014 will host some of the most dynamic practitioners from India and abroad from the fields of design, art, science, social innovation, technology and business. There will be a stimulating mix of panel discussions, interactive workshops and masterclasses, hackathon, culinary explorations, innovative exhibitions, film screenings and performances. The creative folks for this event have been roped from locally, across the country and globe.

The festival challenges the traditional conference format and offers the audience a variety of engagements with an out-of-the-box approach, hands-on approach to workshops, seminars, music and dance performances, and exhibitions that simultaneously focus on socially relevant issues. "My old colleagues and me were toying around with the term out of the box and wanted to shorten it and hence, came up with 'unbox' as it also stands for unboxing oneself. Our aim for the fest is build new projects and connections among diverse creative individuals through the year and hopefully, see those connections back again next year," explains Avinash Kumar, one of the 12 core team members who have been preparing for the event since four months and have been organising the fest since its inception. This group of core team members comprise of young professionals from diverse fields such as engineeers, artists, designers, techies, liberals, etc. with Kumar himself being a designer and a visual artist who runs a studio Quick Sand and the intiative BLOT! along with friends.

UnBox 2014 is scheduled to include 13 talks, 25 workshops, nine field trips, seven showcases and eight performances, which is quite a lot to pick and choose which one should one attend/participate in. Some of the events that caught our attention include: Mangala For All, a workshop/ talk on space travel around the Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission); Digital Craft, a hands-on workshop that brings together block printers from Rajasthan with laser cutters, conductive inks and media; Firefox OS Hackathon, this will explore to elevate the radical Firefox OS and Mozilla phone; The North East Trail Flavours from a host of different North East Indian cuisines; Medicine Corner Bar, a street medicine inspired (think herbal) mixology experiment (creating cocktails); a performance by Gwyneth Wentink, an internationally acclaimed harpista alongside Cymatical, this live piece is a synergy of live generated visuals and sounds generated by the player's heart and the harp being played.
