There are tough times ahead for Abhishek Choubey’s Udta Punjab. The trailer, which has extensive visuals of lead actor Shahid Kapoor indulging in substance abuse and colourful language, has gone viral online and will be toned down substantially in its theatrical avatar. According to sources, the original trailer that had gone viral was not censored.

Anurag Kashyap’s tweet: “Pleasantly surprised and thankful to the CBFC for seeing the Udta Punjab trailer in the context and clearing it without a single cut.Big one. Having cursed the CBFC always for there overzealous attitude, must credit them where it’s due. Thank you Mr Nihalani. Hoping it continues” — is what woke the Board up to the miss.

Says a source, “The trailer had not even come to the CBFC when it was put on the internet. Now it has been certified with the language seriously toned down.”

All the expletives which Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are heard mouthing online, have been removed for theatrical viewing. Says Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani, “The trailer has now been viewed and suitably modified.”
