If you’re looking for some beauty inspiration, look no further than the Academy Awards. The hair and make-up looks created much buzz on the red carpet. While Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson turned heads with their hair-dos, the jury is still out on whether the classic red lip or the contemporary nude pout won over the red carpet. Groomed brows, lustrous lashes and subtle smoky eyes were also seen here.

Look at those locks

Big curls: Halle Berry chose to celebrate her natural hair on the red carpet, keeping her mane big and curly. While many critiqued her do, comparing it to a wig worn by Whitney Houston, others praised her statement- making hair. Vipul Bhagat, hair and make-up expert says, “Curls are very much in. While most celebrities go for updos, it’s nice to see effortless styles on the red carpet.”

Crop cut: Scarlett Johansson sported an edgy pixie cut with shaved sides. Textured waves on the top added a rock and roll vibe. Kapil Bhalla, make-up and hair expert adds, “Hair can add a lot to one’s look and while her make-up was soft and pretty, her hairstyle was quite radical.”

Classic red vs modern nudes

Statement red: The classic red lip was seen at the awards night with a number of actresses including Nicole Kidman, Olivia Munn and Ruth Negga choosing the colour. Vipul explains, “Red lips are heavy maintenance and should be avoided by those who suffer from colour bleeding. If going for red, stick to matte shades. As most women opt for pale skin-toned gowns, a red lip adds a vibrant touch to the look. Just ensure the rest of your make-up is minimal.”

Pretty in pink: Take cue from Janelle Monae, Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams and play around with nude lip tones. Kapil says, “If opting for darker eyes, stick to a pale lip. The subtle colour can add a glow to your overall look and works especially well on women with darker skin tones.”

Eye spy

Subtle smoky eye: Taraji P Henson accentuated her eyes with a bold dark blue liner and smudged it in to create a slight smoky effect. It was a pleasant change from the heavy kohl look. “The softer, shimmery eye look is trending currently. The eyes are more subtle and not over-the-top. The emphasis is more on defined lashes, lots of mascara and liner rather than a heavy lid. This allows one more experimentation with lip colour too,” adds Kapil.

Pop goes the eye colour: Bright eye colours were seen on the Spring 2017 runways and Olivia Culpo sported her own version of this with a lavender eye. The statement making eye shadow was all she needed, keeping the rest of her make-up basic. Vipul says, “Don’t be scared of bright eye colours. In fact, a vibrant blue works really well on Indian skin tones. Keep the base minimal and finish with a baby pink lip.”
